This election, dignity is on the ballot paper

Every day too many Queenslanders along with their families and carers, experience the pain, the distress and the struggle of untreatable or terminal illness.

Each month on average, at least seven Queenslanders who are suffering from a terminal, or chronic or degenerative condition commits suicide.

The 2020 Queensland Parliamentary Report into Voluntary Assisted Dying recommends that Voluntary Assisted Dying be legalised and be accessible to Queenslanders, with specific safeguards in place for patients and medical practitioners.

We call on all candidates in the 2020 Queensland Election to commit to supporting Voluntary Assisted Dying for Queenslanders if they are elected on 31 October 2020.

Both my parents died in their 50’s of bowel cancer which puts me in the high risk category. A nasty and painful death. I want the right to decide my own death not linger in agony. I am allergic to all narcotic based painkillers

for me, the term “voluntary” is the key word here. No other person should be involved in the decision to terminate a life other than the person involved as long as that person has the ability to make that decision. Irrespective of the reason(s). Where that ability is not there, eg. in a coma, then a “dignified” and “humane” passing should be arranged by appropriate other persons.

It is now time to allow people the choice. End unneccsary suffering now.

The health services are wonderful but it is cruel to keep someone alive when they are naturally dying and want to go.

I passionately believe in the right of individuals to control the time and manner of their own death in circumstances where they are suffering from an incurable disease and enduring continuous pain, mental suffering, or loss of dignity.

No-one has the right to dictate to another person how or when they must die. Even the Catholic Church recognises in the 1965 Encyclical “The Declaration on Religious Freedom” that all people have the right to follow their own informed conscience.
