Every day too many Queenslanders along with their families and carers, experience the pain, the distress and the struggle of untreatable or terminal illness.

Each month on average, at least seven Queenslanders who are suffering from a terminal, or chronic or degenerative condition commits suicide.

The 2020 Queensland Parliamentary Report into Voluntary Assisted Dying recommends that Voluntary Assisted Dying be legalised and be accessible to Queenslanders, with specific safeguards in place for patients and medical practitioners.

We call on all MPs to commit to supporting Voluntary Assisted Dying for Queenslanders.

To deny any Australian the right to choose VAD should we ever need to, when some Australians do have that right, is absurdly wrong.

To continue to allow the will of the minority who oppose VAD to take precedence over my desire to have the right to make a choice for VAD is preposterous.

Too many are forced to linger on for days or even a few weeks in an existence of extreme and intolerable pain and suffering when palliative treatment becomes insufficient. That is barbaric torture.

I am an adult, l am sane, l demand the right to choose an assisted death should l ever be in the desperate position to need to make that choice of my own free will.

I just faced this with my 47 year old terminally ill husband. I had to watch him suffer while his highly medicated body absorbed all of the legally allowable amount of end of life care. It took him 3 days and 3 nights drowning, as his body filled with fluid. I, the wife who swore to her husband that she would not leave his side until the end, had to endure 3 days and 3 nights and the “death rattle” while I waited for my husband to die. Not being able to care for himself, control his body, or even know who I was all due to a brain met that had developed in his final weeks of life. He would be embarrassed, appalled, and down right disgusted if he knew what was going on around him. I held his hand as he left this world 3 weeks ago this morning. I’m proud to say, I fulfilled my promise and stayed with him till he took his final breathe. I lost my soul mate and love of my life, but instead of being able to focus on the beautiful memories, I can’t get the sounds and smells out of me head and nose…..I’m glad he doesn’t know what he and I , his sister and his dad all went through in his final week of life. As proud of a Queenslander as he was, born and bred, he’d be ashamed….

Our daughter passed away from melanoma in 2017 at 25 years old. She was vocal through the media on assisted dying. The last month of her life was devastating.
