This election, dignity is on the ballot paper

Every day too many Queenslanders along with their families and carers, experience the pain, the distress and the struggle of untreatable or terminal illness.

Each month on average, at least seven Queenslanders who are suffering from a terminal, or chronic or degenerative condition commits suicide.

The 2020 Queensland Parliamentary Report into Voluntary Assisted Dying recommends that Voluntary Assisted Dying be legalised and be accessible to Queenslanders, with specific safeguards in place for patients and medical practitioners.

We call on all candidates in the 2020 Queensland Election to commit to supporting Voluntary Assisted Dying for Queenslanders if they are elected on 31 October 2020.

The enquiry has shown clearly the urgency of this legislation. Please push for this legislation to be enacted as soon as possible after the State election. Having good palliative care is important, as is an Advanced Health Directive, but neither is in any way a substitute for VAD availability. All three are essential components of a good health system. Every Queenslander deserves VAD as an option – just like some other states and many overseas jurisdictions have enjoyed for a long time. VAD is an absolute right for every citizen.

Palliative care does not work for everyone to relieve their suffering. Terminally ill people should not be forced to spend their last few months or weeks in intolerable pain which can only be relieved by turning them into morphine addicts, and depriving them of dignity and the ability to say a peaceful goodbye to their loved ones while they are still able to do so. The attitude of the religious right in forcing their views on the rest of the population because it makes them feel good is to be condemned and in my opinion, unchristian.

To be forced to exist in a world of suffering, intolerable pain and where there is no possibility of becoming well again is wrong and inhumane. The right for an individual to choose a legal, assisted, dignified escape if they need to must become enshrined in law as soon as possible. This issue will determine where I cast my vote in the next election.

Every human being should have the right to die surrounded by there loved ones.

As it currently stands I wouldn’t have that choice if I needed it.

It is an issue that is important to me & I will certainly be something I willbe taking

into account when I voteat this election.

As a senior Australian it is very important to me that I should have control over my end of life decisions. To this end I will consider which candidate will support the legalisation of Physician Assisted Dying when casting my vote. It is time Australia and Queensland in particular grew up on this issue.
