Call for volunteers

The response to our call out to become a volunteer was wonderful. We received responses from 11 members and supporters who wished to volunteer their skills covering nearly all the areas (Communication, Administration, Event Organising) we asked for support in.

Thank you so much to everyone who contacted us and offered to help.

DWDQ – Public VAD Information Sessions

DWDQ held a Public Information Session on Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) at Bracken Ridge Library (Brisbane) on the 30th May. The information session was well-attended by both existing and new supporters alike. An engaged and appreciative audience was taken through the process of accessing VAD and the steps involved to have an application for VAD approved, along with a few pointers on making the process easier. Plenty of discussion and questions followed over morning tea.

Following on from this successful Information Session we have held another session at Ashgrove Library (Brisbane) on the 7th of June and another at Bundaberg Library on the 17th June.

July 2024 – VAD Public Information Session

To keep up the momentum and ensure the general public is aware of VAD as a choice at the end-of-life, DWDQ has opened bookings for its next information session to be held at:

Strathpine Library (Brisbane)

1 Station Street, Strathpine (Cnr Gympie Road)

Monday, 8th July 2024

Commencing at 9.30am

DWDQ invites you, your family and friends to attend. To register and for catering purposes, please email the Public Education Team at [email protected] and include how many people you would like to bring along (e.g. +2).

VAD Second Request Witness Register

In recent months DWDQ has received requests from the QVAD Support Service to provide witnesses when a person is making their second request to access voluntary assisted dying.

The second request to access voluntary assisted dying must be made in writing and there must be two independent witnesses present when this request is signed.

Eligibility to be a witness

A witness to the second request must be 18 years or older.

You cannot be a witness if:

  • you know or believe you are a beneficiary of the will
  • you know or believe you may otherwise benefit financially or in any other way from the persons death
  • you are the owner or manager at a facility where the person lives or is being treated.
  • you are the coordinating or consulting doctor

A personal note from Sheila Sim follows:

This will be my last update for DWDQ, as for health reasons, I'm resigning from the DWDQ Committee at the end of June.

I'm full of admiration for the great work done by DWDQ, and for the support and encouragement from our members and supporters.  I'll be cheering you on from the sidelines!

With best wishes,

Sheila Sim

President, DWDQ
